Note: Children younger than 6 months old should only drink breast milk or infant formula. Talk with your pediatrician or other health care provider if you are having difficulty breastfeeding or finding infant formula.

In my previous blog posts, I often get asked by some mothers, asking which brand is better? Is it Nestogen or Bonna? Well, I cannot give you a straight answer because I am not a pediatrician nor someone who specializes in formula feeding.  But one piece of advice that I could give you is to carefully compare the nutrition facts and ingredients of each milk brand before giving it to your baby. For example, if your baby has lactose issues, then you are supposed to choose milk that is lactose-free.  However, it's still essential to seek professional advice especially when your baby is not growing normally or has deficiency symptoms.

Before I compare, let me share with you what I read from the research about the formula as stated below:

Infant formulas must meet very high quality standards, ensuring complete safety of their use. They contain well-defined proportions of nutrients such as lipids, proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals. The aim is to ensure that their composition maximally resembles mother’s milk, and to this purpose, producers try to improve the proportions of protein and fat, increase vitamin and mineral content, and also add probiotics, prebiotics and omega-3 fatty acids.

So let's compare now Bonna and Nestogen Milk.

Similarities and Differences in Macronutrients

According to the National Library of Medicine, macronutrients like protein, carbohydrates, and fats are essential for the development and growth of a baby. Here are the similarities and differences between the two.

  • Both Bonna and Nestogen offer these essential nutrients: protein, carbohydrates, fats
  • Bonna has more amount of protein, energy, and fatty acids per 100 grams.
  • Nestogen has more amount of carbohydrates than Bonna.

Let's proceed to Vitamins,  according to webmd.com, these are the vitamins needed for your babies.
  • Vitamin A. Keeps skin, hair, vision, and the immune system healthy.
  • Vitamin B1 (thiamine). Helps the body turn food into energy.
  • Vitamin B2 (riboflavin). Helps the body turn food into energy, and protects cells from damage.
  • Vitamin B3 (niacin). Helps the body turn food into energy and use fats and protein.
  • Vitamin B6. Keeps the brain and immune system healthy.
  • Vitamin B12. Keeps nerve and blood cells healthy, and makes DNA -- the genetic material in every cell.
  • Vitamin C. Protects against infections, builds bones and muscles, and helps wounds heal.
  • Vitamin D. Helps the body absorb calcium from food, and keeps bones and teeth healthy. Breastfed babies may need a D supplement.
  • Vitamin E. Protects cells from damage and strengthens the immune system.
  • Vitamin K. Helps the blood clot.

Similarities and Differences in Vitamins
  • Both Bonna and Nestogen offer these essential vitamins.
  • Although Bonna has more amount of Vitamin A, C, D, E, K, B1, B6, and B12 (See check mark)
  • While Nestogen has more amount of Vitamin B2, Niacin, and Folic
Before buying any formula milk, make sure that the nutrients I enumerated above are listed in the packaging of the milk.

Similarities and Differences in Minerals

These are some of the nutrients babies need to grow and stay healthy including calcium, iron, sodium, manganese, folate, and zinc but given in tiny amounts.

  • Both Bonna and Nestogen offer these essential minerals
  • Although Nestogen has more amount of Chloride, Magnesium. Zinc, Manganese, Iodine, Sodium, Potassium, and Selenium
  • While Bonna has more amount of Calcium, Phosphorus, Iron, Copper

What nutrients does Bonna have that Nestogen doesn't have?

According to webmd.com, these are the functions of these nutrients: Nucleotides and Probiotics.

Nucleotides. These building blocks of RNA and DNA are also found in breast milk and added to some formulas.

They are thought to boost the baby's immune system and help the digestive organs develop.

Prebiotics and probiotics. Probiotics are "good" bacteria that might help protect against the "bad" types of bacteria that cause infection. Prebiotics promote the growth of these good bacteria in the gut.

Conclusion: Which Milk is Better for Babies?

In terms of the number of nutrients, we can conclude that Bonna has more nutrients than Nestogen. However, I am not the right person to tell you which milk is better. Please do your own research so you can decide which milk is better based on your baby's needs.

Just like that! I officially have a 6-year-old Kindergartener. Why does time fly so fast? Time has to really slow down because as she gets older, I get older too. 😀 Kidding aside, I am beyond grateful to see her grow healthy, smart, and unique. Yes, she's unique because when I asked her one time what she wanted to be when she grew up, she said she didn't want to grow up. She just wanted to stay young. She's also a little funny because when I asked her, where do you study (review lessons on language subject)? , she answered I study on the computer, playing games 😀😀😀.

She used to be shy in the past years, but to my surprise, she can get along easily with her other classmates since she started school. She is confident and loves to go to school every day. During the online class, she loves to participate even if her tongue twists whenever she talks and gets upset when the teacher won't call her.

I love that her favorite color is purple and loves all things unicorns. At bedtime, she likes to place all her stuffed toys above her pillow while her head is underneath the pillow. She's a bit weird. But I love to see her progress as time goes by. I know that there are a lot of things for her to learn and explore as she grows up. I know God has a beautiful future in store for her. So I claim more blessings, abundance, and a bright future for her, in Jesus name. Amen.

You are encouraged to consult with your pediatrician concerning the needs of your baby.

Most babies get all the nutrients they need from breast milk or formula in the first 6 months of life. The exception is vitamin D and K, which are recommended as supplements for breastfed babies starting soon after birth and some formula-fed babies.

Also, babies who are healthy and growing normally may not need any extra vitamins. However, if your baby has certain health problems or wasn't born at a normal weight, he may need supplements. Be sure to speak with your baby's doctor if you have concerns. And remember that breastfeeding moms can also have an impact on the nutritional content of their breast milk.

Which Vitamin Supplements Could a Baby Need?

Here are some of the supplements that your babies or infants may need to make up for any deficiency symptoms. It’s important to always check in with your pediatrician before making any hasty decisions about vitamin supplements.

Vitamin A: It keeps the eyes, skin, and hair healthy by protecting them against infections and other diseases.

Vitamin C: It is essential for proper growth and development. It helps build strong bones and teeth, as well as protect against infections.

Vitamin D: It is an essential nutrient for babies under one year of age. It helps the body absorb calcium to support bone growth.

Vitamin B Complex.  They are vital for the proper breakdown of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates in food into energy for normal growth and development. This vitamin also plays a role in maintaining the brain and immune system healthy.

Vitamin E. It is another vitamin that is essential for babies under one year. It supports the normal development of the nervous system and brain function.

I blogged about Camp Philips many years ago and shared many good things about this place and how to get here. And before the pandemic struck, we were able to visit here again and see the beautiful tree Sakura (cherry blossom) that only flowers during summer.  But during our visit just a couple of months ago, we were not able to catch the Sakura flowers because it's already out of season.  However, the Golden flower took place (see the photos below). Sakura and Golden flowers are popular flowers here in Bukidnon.  We love to visit here over and over again because the climate is so cool and the nature that surrounds the community is so refreshing. Please see our photos below.
