My older brother and I used to fight when we were younger, maybe, because we differed in many things. Our age gap and gender could have been some of the factors of our constant squabble. We didn't agree on many things that often turned into siblings' fight.

When I see my two girls, 6 and 2, fight each other,  it reminds me of my childhood memories. While Chesska was quite excited when Psalm arrived in the family, she sometimes got jealous when our attention was focused on her younger sibling. Well, it is understandable because she'd been our first-born for four years and was used to be the center of attraction.
But when Psalm is a little older and has a personality on her own, the fight started. They are both competing for our attention and love. For instance, when I sat Chesska on my lap, the younger one would cry, wanting to be included too.  Aside from that, they keep fighting over toys. Since Chesska owns most of the toys, she will get angry when Psalm snatches the toys from her. The tendency is the younger one would cry and beg us to borrow the toys from her.  Yes, we constantly remind Chesska that it's important to share but she's just a kid, too, whose emotion is out of control.

Hearing them fight is so upsetting so here are some tips on how I deal with siblings' fight.

1. Pay Equal Attention

It takes time for the first-born to accept her new sibling because she is already used to a big amount of attention her parents are giving. But I am fortunate to have a partner who is hands-on with my kids. When my attention is too focused with Psalm (since she needs extra care, attention, and protection), he is there to spend more time with Chesska. But when Psalm is asleep, I try my best to read story books and play toys with her. Also,  when we run some errands, we make sure to bring them along so they will feel that they are equally loved.

2. Avoid Favoritism

Tip #2 hits me most because I played favoritism at times. I admit I seemed to have neglected Chesska when Psalm arrived in the family. I gave more hugs and kisses to Psalm (you will understand me because babies are naturally cuddly) because I always thought that I had already poured out my attention to Chesska for many years. When both were playing and physical harm was already involved, I right away scolded or pinched Chesska, which is wrong. It's best that when emotion between the kids arise, separate them until they calm down. Talk nicely to the older one that she needs to be caring and loving as ATE (Filipino term for older sister).

3. Have Fun Together as a Family

We always made it to the point to have fun together whether watching a movie, taking a walk outside our house or spending a mini-vacation, to establish a good relationship among the family. Creating happy memories can help reduce the conflict between the kids.

4. Never Compare

I try my best not to compare because both have different personalities. Chesska is a timid and clingy girl yet achiever in school. On the other hand,  Psalm is smiling and jolly but I won't expect anything whatever she can achieve in school soon.  Plain and simple, NEVER COMPARE.

Have you experienced your kids fighting? How did you deal with it? Feel free to share your story in the comment sections below.

Chesska will be officially grade one next week. It's been three years now since she attended school. And yes, we are surviving! I remember during her first year when she went home crying and refused to attend school anymore. As a parent, I got disappointed. So I wrote a letter to the teacher to clarify the issue and eventually found out that Chesska had been dealing with separation anxiety. Which was no longer a surprise because Chesska was an introvert type of a kid. In other words, she is clingy and shy with many people. If your child is like Chesska,  here are some helpful tips how I get her to go to school.

1. Prepare Your Child For School Before Her First Day to Reduce Anxiety

Every time I enroll Chesska in our preferred school, I always make sure to bring her around the school campus and have her familiarized the new environment that she will be in soon. I even show to her how her classroom looks like. It will somehow reduce her anxiety.  On the academic side, I homeschooled her before she entered pre-school. At least that way, she can keep up with her peers academically.

2. Accompany Her in School in The First Week Or As Needed

Saying goodbye without tears and letting them go inside the classroom on their own takes time for the children. In Chesska's case, I accompanied her in the classroom for three weeks until she became comfortable with her new peers. I made an effort to introduce her to the teacher and I even approached Chesska's classmates one by one, telling them to befriend her.

3. Be Generous with Rewards

When she was on the verge of giving up the school, we tried everything just to coax her to go to school. Since she loved swimming so much, we always promised her that we would go swimming if she finished the five school days straight in a week. To be honest, we almost round all the resorts here in Davao just to grant her request. Week after week, we prepared different rewards like toys, candies, trip to the mall, or simply a compliment. Our efforts were not put into waste because Chesska always ended the school with flying colors. In fact, when she was in preschool, she received two awards: 3rd Honors and Most Behaved and just recently, in Kindergarten,  she received two awards, too, With Honors and Most Diligent. See, what positive results reward can bring!

4. Be Patient

The secret weapon here is patience. Children having separation anxiety cannot be dealt with overnight.  It must be addressed in a gentle process until they will get used to the new environment which involves socialization. I had had difficulty dealing Chesska's anxiety but as a parent, I refused to give up. For example, just two months ago, Chesska was always asking me until when she would go to school daw.  However, I always diverted her attention into something different such as I promised her to buy a new pony school bag (since she's a huge fan of Pony), school things, and a lunch bag with the Pony characters imprinted on it. Her interest in school was thankfully rekindled and she got excited, too,  to attend school next week. I wish it goes on and on.

Has your child experienced separation anxiety? What are the steps you take to address this issue? Feel free to share your story in the comments section below.

A few months ago, I vowed myself not to eat in gluttony and stayed faithful to my healthy diet. Unfortunately, I cheated myself - well it happens sometimes - as my co-teachers whom I have not met for years invited me to eat in Tong Yang Plus. Though my heart is against with gluttony, but for the sake of our friendship, I accepted the invitation. In fact, it's the second time that they invited me. First,  was in Vikings but I refused because I was pregnant that time with my second baby so I didn't want to overeat. My excuse then was still acceptable but at this time I already trapped in the corner, hehe.

Luisa and I arrived very early at the venue and while waiting for our friends, I leisurely took pictures of the surroundings. This is how the table looks like with a hot pot and grilling set-up. I am aware that "grill your own food" is no longer common to some buffet nowadays, but for a first-timer like me, I was impressed!

Since Chesska was already hungry, we decided not to wait for them and we started to eat.  Chesska is super picky when it comes to foods so I was the one who chose the foods for her. Our table is overloaded with a delicious meal and Chesska's ultimate favorites - cake, candy, and ice cream.

To be honest, I no longer eat pork but I just grilled for the sake of picture-taking, lol. It's actually Luisa's grill of choice.

My experience with Tong Yang Plus was superb. As much as I don't want to overeat, the array of foods being served are irresistible. As a matter of fact, I already unzipped my pants as my tummy wanted to pop out. I will surely come back because I have not tasted everything. A rate of 488 pesos is worth to try.

We frequently spent out-of-town trips this month to beat the summer heat. Nobody wants hot days but everybody loves summer vacation (raise your hand if you agree, hehe).  Speaking of summer vacation, we take advantage the season by going to cold places and taking some days off from our hectic work.  In fact, over a month ago, we went to Bukidnon where my older brother resides to spend there our Holy Week Vacation (sorry I failed to blog it but I wrote about Dahilayan Adventure about 4 years ago).

In addition to our summer escapades, over the weekend, we explored Loleng's Mountain Resort to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We almost round all the resorts here in Davao so this is what is left in our vacation bucket list. The resort is 20 minutes away from where we live and easily accessible to those who have private cars. Here are our pictures.
Outfit of the Day
I was looking forward to many adventures at Lolengs but I got disappointed when they stopped the fishing and boating as seen on their Facebook page. Next time, don't rely too much on social media posts. However, we were so amused feeding and playing with the friendly white doves.

Overlooking Davao City

Aside from dove feeding and sight-seeing, the day could be boring if you wouldn't go swimming.  The water source is from the spring so it is just flowing freely.
Wearing swimsuit brings out the curves and fats in you. But hey, do I have fats or bones visible?

Ate Chesska bravely swam the 7-ft portion of the pool using her swimming gear.
These are some of the Loleng's resort amenities.

Our brief stay at Lolengs Mountain resort was not as fun as in Eden Garden resort but if you want a get away that is friendly to the pocket and at the same time relax your senses, I would highly recommend Loleng Mountain Resort.

It's been more than a week since Chesska's Moving Up Ceremony. My girl is so happy when she learned that the school is finally over as she often complains that she's tired na daw. If she just only knew, that's not yet the end but it's the starting point of her school life.

Even though she shows small interest towards school, I am still amazed that she manages to be part of the honor students. What we only expect from her from the start is she'll just finish the entire school year, that's it!  But she gave more than what we expected.

St. Rafael Class with the School Administrators
She received two awards - 3rd Honors and Most Diligent. Last year, she got Most Behave award but not this year anymore. She wasn't able to break her papa's record who had been most behaved since grade 1 to grade 6. Probably, she inherited two traits from us - most behave from her papa and most diligent from me (hehe).

Summer Vacation

When the school ends, it means summer vacation is about to start. As much as I love summer vacation, I hate hot weather. So I want to welcome summer in Bukidnon where the climate is cool all year round. We probably stay there for one month and get back as soon as the enrolment for grade 1 starts. How about you, how would you spend your summer?
